From a very young age, consciously or unconsciously, all human beings strive to be happy. As we grow older we consciously choose activities that not only give us happiness in the moment but make us remember that time with fondness over our lifetimes. For me the USTEP program in Istanbul was one such experience. I would not be exaggerating in saying that meeting striking individuals from different backgrounds and transcending the barriers of language to connect with them has been one of the most enriching experiences of my life.

One of the highlights of the program was the focus on team building activities which ensured that all of us learned each other’s names very quickly. Even though we were together for such a short period of time, this ensured that we develop deeper bonds. This also made meal times very entertaining and allowed us to discuss opportunities beyond just the USTEP program. One of my favourite sessions was the one focusing on entrepreneurship. I think too many people focus on finding jobs and not enough people are given the opportunity to think beyond that. By exposing everyone to the idea that they can be their own bosses, USTEP took a very courageous step which I appreciate. I also liked the culture night.

The Czech team organised a competition (called Czech Olympics) in which we participated in a number of small individual and team competitions. The video resume activity was also a much needed skill that we all needed to acquire. Facing the camera for the first time and speaking about my own experiences was more challenging than I would have initially thought. However, it is a skill I value now.

The coordinators were very friendly. The arrangements were also very professional. I found all individuals to be very helpful during my time at the course.

Istanbul as a city is a great location for such a program as one learns so much not just from the program but also from the city. The unique blend of old and new and a preservation of history unlike anywhere else in the world makes the city a school of learning in itself. All in all this was a brilliant experience for me and I would love to be a part of future programs by USTEP.
